Zelensky: I want to discuss Russian invasion directly with Chinese leader Xi

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered the 162nd day, a remarkable step came from the leader of Ukraine, Zelenskiy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that he wanted to meet directly with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to end the 162-day war with Russia.

Speaking to the Chinese news site South China Morning Post, Zelenskiy said that he asked Chinese President Xi to use his political and economic relations with Russia to end the war. Noting that they have been trying to establish close relations with China for a long time, Zelenskiy said, “A very strong country, a very strong economy… Therefore, it may affect Russia. Also, China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Speaking to the Chinese press for the first time since the beginning of the war, the Ukrainian leader said, “I talked to President Xi about a year ago. I would like to meet him directly. After the attack on February 24, we made an official request but could not speak. I think it will be very useful.”

Zelenskiy also said, “I am sure that without the Chinese market, Russia would be alone economically.”

Despite the occupation in Ukraine, China continues to develop relations with its close ally, Russia. Chinese President Xi, together with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, whom he met in Beijing before the invasion, gave the message of “boundless friendship” to the world.
