How was al-Qaeda leader Zawahiri, one of the most wanted terrorists in the world, killed?

The murder of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda, one of the most wanted names in the world, by the CIA in an operation in Kabul, fell like a bomb on the world’s agenda. The 71-year-old Zawahiri, who has been sought by the US for years as the main planner of the September 11 attacks, was killed by hellfire missiles on the balcony of his home in Kabul, where he settled after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan. Details of the operation have also emerged.

The murder of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of Al-Qaeda, one of the planners of the September 11 attacks, by the CIA in an operation in Kabul, came to the fore in the world agenda.

After the September 11 attacks in the USA, which shook the world in 2001, the details of the operation in which Zawahiri was killed, which intelligence agencies put a $ 25 million reward on his head, were also revealed.

The death of Zawahiri, who took over the administration of Al Qaeda after Osama Bin Laden was killed in Pakistan in 2011 by a US special operation, dealt a heavy blow to the organization. “Justice has been served and this terrorist leader is no more,” US President Joe Biden said in a statement at the White House. “No matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the United States will find you and take you out.”

Zawahiri has been on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list for years.

A senior US administration official announced that Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed on the balcony of his house in Kabul on Sunday. The official, who did not reveal his name, said that the location of the terrorist, who had been hiding for years, was determined as a result of “careful and patient efforts” and that the CIA focused on the country after the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August last year.

Noting that this year, information was received that Zawahiri moved to a “safe house” in Kabul with his wife, daughter and grandchildren, the official said that the person identified through multi-faceted intelligence studies was confirmed to be the leader of al-Qaeda. It was noted that information on the subject began to be given to US President Biden as of April, and the operation was carefully planned considering the location and structure of the house, weather conditions and other factors.

It was stated that the al-Qaeda leader was killed and his family was not injured in the attack. Zawahiri was killed on the balcony of his house in Kabul on Sunday by “hellfire” missiles fired from CIA drones.

There were rumors that the leader of the terrorist organization was hiding in Pakistan, where Bin Laden was also killed before. A senior Taliban official said that Zawahiri had previously stayed in Helmand, but moved to the capital Kabul after the change of power in Afghanistan.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Taliban had seriously violated the Doha Agreement by aiding and abetting Zawahiri. Former US President Barack Obama expressed his hope that the operation would give some peace to those who lost their relatives in the September 11 attacks. Saudi Arabia also announced that it welcomes the operation.

Zawahiri, who has come to the fore with rumors of her death many times before, recently praised the struggle of women in India for the hijab in her video published in April.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian theologian and general surgeon, was the number two name in al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden and took over the leadership of the organization in 2011 after bin Laden’s death.

The 71-year-old Zawahiri was said to have weakened al-Qaeda’s influence due to his “lack of a charismatic leader” and increased competition with other Islamist organisations. In recent years, many senior figures of the organization have been killed in US attacks. On the other hand, the instability in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, especially after the Arab Spring, led the organization to find new resources.

Born into a wealthy and well-known Cairo family, and his father, a professor of pharmacology, Zawahiri embraced radical Islamist views at the age of 15. His friends from the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University told that the leader of the terrorist organization was a fun person who went to the movies and listened to music in his youth.

Working as a doctor in Pakistan for the treatment of Afghans who were fighting the Soviet Union, Zawahiri met Bin Laden, a wealthy Saudi jihadist, during this period. Zawahiri, who became the head of the Islamic Jihad organization in 1993, which aims to establish an Islamist regime in his country Egypt, also gave the orders for many terrorist attacks. Zawahiri, who disappeared after being sentenced to death in Egypt in 1999, founded Al Qaeda together with Bin Laden during this period.
