Sezgin Baran Korkmaz trial postponed

At today’s hearing in the Sezgin Baran Korkmaz case in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, a 90-day adjournment decision was made for the review of evidence in the hands of the defense.

Korkmaz did not attend the hearing held via Zoom. Korkmaz’s defense was provided by his attorneys Matt Crowl and Nafiz Korkmaz.

Korkmaz’s attorney, Crowl, told the judge they had 16,700 documents to defend themselves and needed time to research and present the relevant documents in court.

According to VOA’s Can Kamiloğlu News, Judge Jared Bennett granted the defense’s request and ordered a rehearing on January 17.

Judge Bennett said that according to the arrest report released during the first hearing, Korkmaz, who was arrested, did not meet any of the conditions of release and that there was no convincing evidence for his trial in awaiting trial.

Korkmaz, who stood trial for being involved in a billion-dollar biodiesel fraud, laundering money wrongfully received as an inducement from the tax office and committing money transfer fraud, was extradited from Austria to the United States on July 16 and appeared in court for the first time two days later.

At the first hearing, the charges against Korkmaz were read in front of Utah 3rd District Magistrate Jarred Bennet, who appeared with his attorneys, and Korkmaz said he does not accept the charges. against him.

The hearing for Sezgin Baran Korkmaz, who has been in pre-trial detention for about two and a half months since his extradition to the United States, has been postponed to October 4 from a previous September 21 hearing.
