Germany announces that it will receive Russians who want to flee the country, after the mobilization was decreed

Officials in Berlin said on Friday that Germany is open to receiving Russians trying to flee the country, following President Vladimir Putin’s decision to decree a “partial military mobilization” to send new troops to the battlefield in Germany, reports CNN.

“Many of the Russians who are now being drafted do not want to take part in this war either. This is a good sign,” Steffen Hebestreit, spokesman for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, told the media during a press briefing.

“A way must be left open for the Russians to come to Europe and also to Germany,” Hebestreit said.

According to him, EU member states must find a “viable solution” on how to deal with Russian citizens who are unwilling to respond to Vladimir Putin’s “partial mobilization” order.

The German chancellor’s spokesman added that the motives of each such claimant would have to be analyzed before asylum was granted.

On Thursday, the German foreign and interior ministries indicated that citizens fleeing Russia can apply for asylum in Germany.

“Defectors threatened with serious repression can – as a rule – obtain international protection in Germany,” said the German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, quoted by the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Germany has received 438 people from Russia through a program that is supposed to offer protection to dissidents, journalists and scientists, said Maximilian Kall, a spokesman for the German interior minister. He added that the procedures had already been changed in April, so that “as a rule, objections related to the exercise of free conscience are a reason for protection” from the German state.

The exact number of Russians seeking asylum in Germany is not yet known.
