The head of American diplomacy, Anthony Blinkenarrived in Australia for a meeting with allies from the Asia-Pacific region to reaffirm his commitment to the region in the face of the rise of China.

After hectic weeks focused on the crisis of UkraineBlinken will devote two days to meetings with his counterparts from the quad groupan alliance with India, Australia and Japan designed as a bastion against the growing military and economic power of China in the region.

The secretary of state admitted that a hypothetical Russian invasion of Ukraine has been “front and center” of the US government’s concerns, but insisted that his administration’s “pivot” to the Asia-Pacific region in the face of growing of China was still alive.

“The world is a great place. Our interests are global and everyone knows very well the focus we put on the Asia-Pacific and Indo-Pacific regions,” he told reporters on the plane. Following that line, the Under Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Daniel Kritenbrink, assured: “The Quad is a key component in the economic and security foreign policy of the United States in the region.”

Created in 2007 to frame a series of joint naval exercises by the United States, India and Japan, this alliance gained importance again in 2020 with the union of Australia and the bloody battles between Indian and Chinese troops on the border of both countries.

The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marise Payne, indicated that the meetings will focus on the distribution of anticovid vaccines in the region, cybertechnology, the fight against terrorism and disinformation, climate change and security.
