His passion for football has yielded to his heart problems: this Wednesday Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero announced that he is hanging up his boots after nearly two decades on the football fields, due to an arrhythmia. “Maradona conquered Italy, Messi Spain and Agüero England”, the words of Pep Guardiola about who is the second best Argentine of his generation after Leo Messi.

His health problems put an end to a career that this Buenos Aires native debuted at the age of 15 with Independiente de Avellaneda against San Lorenzo in the 2003 Closing Tournament, although his true takeoff would begin two years later.

Dudamel: “In football you have to be a thief of ideas”

The ‘Kun’, nickname that comes from the protagonist of a Japanese cartoon whose name babbled when he was very young, then became the youngest player to debut in the first division, surpassing the record of Diego Maradona.

His relationship with the Argentine soccer star would be strengthened when he had a relationship with Giannina, Maradona’s daughter, from whom he separated in 2012 and from whom his son Benjamin was born in Madrid.

– Arrival in Europe –

When he was a father, ‘Kun’ was playing for Atlético de Madrid, from whose hand he made the leap to Europe in July 2006.

“I have no doubts that Agüero will be a benchmark in Europe,” Atletico CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín said at the time.

In the rojiblanco club, ‘Kun’ will play more than 200 games, scoring 100 goals and lifting the Europa League and the European Super Cup in 2010.

Owner of a fearsome and fast shot in hand-to-hand, Agüero arrived in July 2011 at Manchester City, where he will become a club legend and in which in ten years he will accumulate a plethora of titles: 5 Premier Leagues, 1 FA Cup, 6 League Cups, 3 Community Shield.

Agüero, who only has the thorn remaining from not having achieved a Champions League, also became the City’s top historical scorer with 260 goals in almost 400 games and is also the top foreign scorer in the Premier League (184 goals).

Decisive man, already in his first season at City he scored the crucial goal in the comeback against Queens Park Rangers (3-2) on the final round of the championship, which allowed City to be crowned league champions for the first time since 1968.

A feat with which he has already won the hearts of City fans and even one of the boxes at the Etihad Stadium has been christened ’93: 20 ‘in honor of the playing time in which Agüero changed the fate of the club.

The ‘Kun’ ended his English adventure last season at the end of his contract to return to Spain, to Barcelona.

“When Barça asked about me a month and a half ago, I didn’t doubt it,” said Agüero in his presentation as a new Barça player in June, although he could not fulfill his illusion of forming an attacking partner with his friend and teammate Lionel Messi , who left for PSG in August.

– The America Cup –

The injuries and then his heart problem, detected in October when he had to withdraw from the league match against Alavés after suffering dizziness, have barely allowed him to intervene in five games with his new club and score a goal, before ending his race.

A final that also leaves the Albiceleste without one of its milestones, with which it has played 101 games and scored 41 goals, since making its debut at the age of 18 in a friendly against Brazil in 2006 (3-0 loss).

The ‘Kun’ was part of the so-called “Fantastic Four”, a deadly quartet on paper formed with Messi, Ángel Di María and Gonzalo Higuaín, but which never shone in the big events.

With the Albiceleste, Agüero played the World Cups in South Africa-2010, Brazil-2014 (in which Argentina was runner-up) and Russia-2018.

In 2021 he managed to win the Copa América for the first time, after being runner-up in 2015 and 2016 and a third place in 2019, as well as another fourth place in 2011.

With the U-20 team he won the 2005 World Cup in the Netherlands, as well as the 2007 World Cup in Canada and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
