Hockey players of Re-Plast Union Oświęcim lost to the Italian team Asiago Hockey 3:4 (1:1, 0:2, 2:1) in their second game of the semi-final tournament of the Continental Cup held in Nitra.
Saturday’s meeting started well for the Polish runners-up. In the 12th minute they took advantage of the fact that one of Asiago’s hockey players was in the penalty box and took the lead. However, before the end of the first period, the rivals equalized, and in the second period they added two more goals.
When at the beginning of the third period Asiago scored to make it 4-1, it seemed that the game was over. However, the inhabitants of Oświęcim fought ambitiously until the last seconds to lead to extra time. The goal at 3:4 was scored several seconds before the end of the match, but there was no time to score an equalizing goal.
Poor attitude at set pieces, individual errors and inefficiency (the team from Oświęcim fired almost twice as many shots as rivals) meant that the Polish team ended the meeting with a defeat and thus complicated the situation in the group. Advancement to the final tournament, however, is still real.
In the first meeting – on Friday – the inhabitants of Oświęcim defeated the team from Ukraine HK Krzemieńczuk 4:2. In turn, their Saturday rivals lost to HK Nitra 2:5. The Sunday meeting between the Union and Nitra will start at 18.00.
