Hüseyin Ergün, who lost his foot after a traffic accident but did not lose his joy of life, draws attention with his achievements in athletics. “I want to be like Usain Bolt,” said Ergün, who is studying at Mersin University.
Hüseyin Ergün, who came to Mersin to study 4 years ago, was seriously injured in his right foot after the car crashed into him when he wanted to cross the road.
Ergün, a student of Mersin University Fine Arts Department, whose foot could not be saved despite the treatments, almost embraced life with 4 hands after the incident. The 24-year-old youth sought to improve himself. The young athlete, who later became interested in athletics, took his first step into this sport 1.5 years ago with a special prosthesis he brought from abroad.
Ergün, who became a professional in a short time with the support he received from his environment, said, “In 2018, I had a traffic accident in Mersin. My foot was crushed in the accident, they couldn’t save my foot after the treatments, so I had a below-knee amputation. After that period, I always tried to improve myself because I continued my school with the philosophy of ‘how a person gets up when he falls, not how he falls’. Then I thought of running. As a result of my research, I learned that I can do this sport with special prostheses. But since there are very few people who do this sport in this way in Turkey, I took advantage of the resources abroad. Later, I contacted the Turkish Physically Handicapped Sports Federation via e-mail. They also directed me to Ahmet Sekman, my current trainer. I have been professionally involved in athletics for 1.5 years. I had a problem with the supply of sportsman prosthesis. This prosthesis is not available in Turkey and is supplied from abroad.
TWO TIMES FIRST IN TURKEY
Emphasizing that his goal is to be selected for the national team and represent Turkey in international arenas, Hüseyin Ergün said, “I won the first place in Turkey twice. Professionally, I ran the 100 meters in 15 seconds in my provincial run. I improved myself and 1 month ago, I ran the 100 meters in 14 seconds and the 200 meters in 27 seconds, in the Physically Handicapped Brackets Turkey Championship, and got the first place in Turkey in both lanes. My current goal is to be selected for the national team and represent Turkey abroad. I believe that I will be able to achieve this,” he said.
“My name is already Huseyin”
Stating that there are many people like him, Ergün pointed out that everyone should work for their dreams. Stating that he had difficulties with the sponsorship, the successful athlete said, “At first, I was also hesitant, I had question marks in my mind, but from the moment I started, as I trained, the obstacles in my mind were removed. It has made me and my environment proud in my achievements. I have many friends like me, but there are very few of us who do this sport in Turkey. I believe that if I can run at the same speed as an individual without any disability, they will make their dreams come true with this belief. I admit that it is difficult to do this sport, I find it difficult to find supporters in this regard. If I can find a sponsor, it will be easier for me to do this sport. My name is Hüseyin anyway, and I want to be like Usain Bolt.”
