Lucian Romașcanu, the minister of culture, declared on Monday that he is waiting for the result of an investigation and he wants TVR not to be involved in the scandal of eliminating the score of the Romanian jury from Eurovision, according to Digi24. He also said that he wants Romania to convey that “there is a need for a reform” of this competition, which has become “a political standard bearer”.
“I want to say two things: 1. that we are increasingly politicizing a phenomenon that has begun to be a cultural and unifying phenomenon for European countries; and 2. we are compromising not only the phenomenon itself, but also the attention and support we must give to Ukraine “, said the Minister of Culture, Lucian Romașcanu, in a joint press conference with the counterpart from the Republic of Moldova, Sergiu Prodan.
The reaction of the Minister of Culture comes after the organizer of the Eurovision 2022 contest on Sunday decided to eliminate the marks offered by the juries from six countries due to some irregularities detected in the voting process. Among the countries whose jury was eliminated is Romania.
“Ukraine had to win. Probably on merit. He didn’t need such things. Those who thought – and I hope it wasn’t the Romanians -, EBU, to make such a transfer of votes did harm to them, to the competition and to Ukraine “, Lucian Romașcanu also declared.
He said the Ministry of Culture had no involvement in the matter. “It simply came to our notice then. I would like a complete reset of Eurovision, on other grounds, only for the public to matter, because this political division of votes – which we have been seeing for years – has nothing to do with it “, said the Minister of Culture. “I do not see how you can stop this thing from voting for others unless you let the public choose. If you put a jury, inevitably: come on, they are our brothers “, Romașcanu explained.
Romanian Television said on Monday that it had asked the organizers of the contest, ESC, to provide, officially, the concrete reasons why they replaced the Romanian jury’s score with a “substitute” calculated “in a non-transparent way”. Depending on the answer that will be sent to him, TVR “reserves the right to take measures to correct the situation created”, states a communiqué.
