How To Eat Mangosteen? What is this fruit and what are its properties?

Mangosteen is a fruit grown in the tropics, growing on trees of the same name. The Chinese refer to it as “the queen of fruits” (another fruit, durian, is the king). Mangosteen fruit is delicious in taste and valued for its health benefits, as are tea and juice made from it.

The mangosteen fruit has a regular oval shape and is slightly smaller than a tennis ball. The mangosteen rind and juice are dark purple in color. Under the skin there is a flesh that resembles garlic cloves in shape and size. The mangosteen flesh melts in the mouth, is juicy and pleasant to the taste, slightly sour, but also sweet at the same time.

In natural conditions mangosteen proper (because this is its full name) can be found in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia or Thailand, where it is valued for its taste and health properties.

How to get inside the mangosteen? How to eat mangosteen fruit properly covered with a fairly thick crust? To get to the tasty flesh, we first have to beat the outer layer. Mangosteen peels are not eaten because its juice is very bitter and unpalatable. The top of the fruit is decorated with thick greenish leaves. On the opposite side, at the bottom of the mangosteen fruit, there is a sort of jagged lump. To get inside the fruit, you can press hard on that spot. Then the mangosteen peel will start to crack on the sides, revealing its sweet, juicy, slightly sour contents. Others recommend cutting the rind crosswise in two with a knife.

Ripe mangosteen fruit has green leaves. They change their color after a few days and it is also a sign that the mangosteen fruit is already overripe. It is for this reason – short shelf life, mangosteen is practically not found in the regular offer in stores. We can try it in the countries where it grows. Mangosteen is mostly eaten raw. It is less common as an ingredient or addition to other dishes.

Mangosteen fruit flavor

Some people compare mangosteen flavor to taste wild strawberries, apricots, oranges or pineapple. Others point to a similarity to lychee. So it proves the taste that gives the possibility of a fairly rich interpretation, which encourages you to try mangosteen even more. The fruit tastes best when it is fresh and ripe – and this is what it only lasts for a few days, which explains why it cannot be found in countries other than those where it is grown and a delicacy. Although there are literally several-day promotions in retail chains, under which mangosteen can also be bought in Poland.

Properties of mangosteen

Mangosteen is valuable for its nutritional value. 100 grams (g) of this fruit provides about 70 calories. About 16% of its weight is made up of sugars – mostly glucose and fructose. 100 g contains 3 mg of vitamin C. Mangosteen contains minerals, enzymes and antioxidants. It is also a source of hydroxycitric acid. This acid (HCA) is used as an ingredient in dietary supplements. According to research, mangosteen increases the feeling of satiety, which translates into reduced appetite. It also lowers cholesterol. This explains the popularity of mangosteen in the production of slimming agents.

Mangosteen tea

Mangosteen infusion can be obtained by pouring boiling water over the dried fruit. They are relatively commercially available in dried form. Mangosteen tea eagerly eaten by people trying to lose weight, because it helps to lose weight. Mangosteen fruits are high in fiber and low in calories. Drinking mangosteen tea is said to give you a long-lasting feeling of fullness and cleanses the body of toxins. Mangosteen tea drunk in the morning, e.g. for breakfast, adds energy, so it is worth drinking it especially in autumn and winter. From other positive drinking effects mangosteen infusion It includes counteracting cardiovascular diseases (by reducing blood cholesterol levels, among others), strengthening the body’s immunity – thanks to vitamin C, as well as improving the appearance and condition of the skin. It is also available for sale mangosteen fruit extract with the same properties, recommended for salads, yoghurts and as an addition to juices.

Mangosteen juice

Mangosteen juice can also be purchased without any problems, eg on the Internet. Its price is around PLN 100 per liter. Daily consumption of mangosteen juice should not exceed 60 ml and it is recommended to break this amount into two equal doses in the morning and evening. Mangosteen juice supports the treatment of psoriasis, and supports the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. It also helps get rid of acne and has anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal and antiviral effects. Mangosteen juice is rich in fiber and many micronutrients, such as iron, potassium, phosphorus, and vitamins C, B1, B2 and B6.
