In case of appendicitis occurring in early period, the duration of hospitalization decreases, while the duration of hospitalization is prolonged in cases where the intervention is delayed. Rupture of appendicitis and the spread of inflammation to the abdomen can cause septic shock and be life-threatening.


Abdominal pain in children occurs for many reasons. Diarrhea, constipation, and even otitis media can swell the lymph nodes in the abdomen and cause abdominal pain. Therefore, not all abdominal pain should be considered appendicitis. The duration and place of onset of pain guide the diagnosis, but appendicitis can progress in the initial stage without giving very typical results. Considering all age groups, the most common emergency requiring surgery in children is appendicitis. You don’t see it very often for the first few years, then it gradually increases. It is more common in the period from school through adolescence. The reason why appendicitis is common in children is that they are more prone to infections.


The diagnosis of appendicitis is very difficult because its symptoms resemble many diseases. In the diagnosis of appendicitis, abdominal ultrasound or MRI methods can be applied after a physical examination. The most important element in the diagnosis of appendicitis is the person’s history and complaints.

The most common treatment for appendicitis is removal of the appendix from the body. Surgical removal of the appendix is ​​called appendectomy. There are 2 types of appendectomy. Removal of the appendix is ​​performed by laparoscopic or open surgery. In both cases, general anesthesia is applied to the patient. Rarely, if the appendicitis has not flared up, it can be treated with antibiotics.
