A prison cell, a bunk bed, a bed, a closet, a chair… Two people in the cell, one of whom is a man who cannot sit still, the other is silent. The door opens, someone new comes in and the game begins.
The previous evening, I watched the play “Acting”, which I had been waiting to see for a while, at the Fişekhane Main Stage.
Some games get me excited before they even start. Just like the excitement experienced by a player before the game.
There are minutes before the curtain opens. You have worked and rehearsed that play day and night for months. The audience slowly begins to fill the hall and take their seats. Whispers rise from time to time, then whisper again… Your heart beats faster, the palms of your hands sweat, you look at the hall from one corner of the curtain, the excitement reaches its peak.
I know this feeling well. I’ve had it many times. That’s why I think those who write play criticism should know every moment of a theater well.
The new game of Exercise Sahne, “Acting”, is one of the best plays of the new season.
The play, directed by Erdal Beşikçioğlu with his wife Elvin Beşikçioğlu, and in which he also starred with Fatih Sönmez and Ahmet Melih Yılmaz, is like a critique of today’s art world. Actually, it’s more of a drama class.
While questioning the play, art and artist, it especially criticizes the television world. It is obvious that the fact that the one with all hands and faces is trying to become an actor is disturbing Erdal Beşikçioğlu, like real actors who have devoted their lives to theater.
We clearly see how those who only care about acting are left alone in the industry. How popular culture and literature actually degenerated… There is also a serious teaching about what popular culture and art are in the game. Those who want to do this profession and even those who try to do it should definitely go and watch this game. More than an hour and a half is a lesson because it’s a game. The stage transforms from a prison cell into a theater classroom. The lecturer is Erdal Beşikçioğlu, what else?
Erdal Beşikçioğlu appears before the audience in the role of “Robert”, an actor and director who killed the producer and went to jail.
Fatih Sönmez plays a prisoner who wants to be an actor. After the lesson, we listen to a Hamlet trad from Sönmez, who is taking the lesson, in other words “The Fraud Gepetto” as he is called in the play. She is naked at the urging of her teacher Robert.
We see Ahmet Melih Yılmaz, who does not speak during the play, with the character of “Horace” on the stage. He doesn’t speak at all throughout the game. He plays a character who is not mute but just does not prefer to speak.
The finale of the age-limited, fun and profanity game is quite unexpected and striking.
Long story short, there is a lesson for everyone to learn in “Acting”, where the concepts of art, fame and popularity are handled fluently with current references through acting.
