Black Panther: Danai Gurira tells details of his character

stickers interviewed Danai Gurira, one of the protagonists of Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverto learn a little more about this second part of the film.

Stickers: Well, this is a special occasion because in this second part of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, pays tribute to the great Chadwick Boseman and I wanted to start this interview by asking you.

What was it like to return to the set with the emptiness it left behind?

Dana Gurira: You know, what we did have was a grieving process going through the recording of this. But we had a sense of purpose around what we were doing, and that was that we were going to honor it through this work. That was a key focus for us throughout the whole thing.

It definitely kept us grounded and focused on how to honor him, how to maintain, you know, the beautiful example that he set for leadership.

How to handle the work ethic and how to really give yourself, give your all in the process and take care of each other. That was something that he made very clear and he did it in a very beautiful way, so we were able to constantly seek to honor that through the way we functioned with each other.

And yes, it was a very difficult process in a way because it was unprecedented. Trying to make a sequel where you know your leader has been sadly and tragically lost.

But at the same time I think what really guided us and anchored us as our North Star, was the fact that we were doing it for his legacy, and we’re doing it to honor him.

C: As a journalist I had the opportunity to see Black Panther before its premiere in Colombia and your character moved me a lot, I have to say it.

Can you tell us 3 favorite things about your character?

DG: Uh, well, I can’t talk much yet because I know it’s not out yet, but I will.

Favorite things, okay when they first told me what my character was going to be like, what? I do not know how to do that! but then I thought it was actually great that a character went through something that challenged her and changed her and I was grateful for that, for her.

But initially, when I was with her inside me, it was “wow”. And so, you know, there was that response to her change.

But I think that’s what you have to do for a character in a world where you’re making a second movie. They have to change, things have to become less comfortable for them.

So she was grateful that that was her art. And you know, I love fight training, especially when you finally start to get good at it because before it was just painful.

C: I figured that out and I love the strength. It was incredible. I was like “oh my gosh I love her”.

DG: Thank you very much. But yeah, it’s a lot, it’s a lot of work but it’s also a lot of fun and you really bond with people and you really get in the trenches together.

And I love my trainers Micah, Ristic and with Nadia, we worked a lot together and they were great, so that was really beautiful.

And then being able to spend a moment on set, you might not expect a big laugh or connecting with the crew.

There are things like that where you feel like a family and they take care of each other and that’s what Chad was very good at, checking on people. They don’t expect it and you know, take care of others.

So when you feel that happening on set, you know, really, you’re in the right place doing the right thing.
