The director of “Elvis” and “The Great Gatsby” came to Poland. In Toruń, he received the award

Baz Luhrmann is the creator of such films as “Moulin Rouge!”, “The Great Gatsby” and “Elvis”. The Australian producer came to Poland on November 14, during the 30th edition of the Festival of the Art of Cinematography EnergaCAMERIMAGE in Toruń, to receive the award for outstanding achievements in directing. Sandra Hajduk-Popińska, a reporter for Dzien Dobry TVN, met with the artist and his collaborator and cinematographer Mandy Walker.

Baz Luhrmann’s Childhood. Love for cinema bloomed from an early age

In an interview with Sandra Hajduk-Popińska, Baz Luhrmann recalled his childhood years and talked about the first moments when he realized that his passion was art and film. At a young age, the popular director had the opportunity to closely observe the duties of cinema employees, which was particularly reflected in his later professional development.

– We lived in a tiny town of maybe 10 houses. After the death of the owner, dad ran this cinema. Father was a photographer. That’s how he met my mother. The most treasured item in our home was the camera my dad used in the Vietnam War, but when he ran a movie theater, I often accompanied him. I saw him take out the tape, put it in the projector. Watching this definitely had a big impact on me. That’s why I told the producers I wouldn’t make “Elvis” unless they agreed to show it in theaters first.

How is it working with Baz Luhrmann?

Creator of “Moulin Rouge!” and “The Great Gatsby” came to Poland with cinematographer Mandy Walker. The operator is a member of Luhrmann’s team. She collaborated with him, among others. in the production of “Elvis” and she is responsible for the fast camera work and moving frames, which critics compare to video clips.

“Baz is like a conductor and we’re like musicians in an orchestra, so everyone on the team is creatively involved in creating his film vision.” – Dzien Dobry TVN confessed in front of the cameras.

– My films seem to be spectacular, but the other side of the coin is always human issues. (…) I hope that I go all the way in relation to what is most human – announced Luhrmann.
