The Volkswagen ID.5 looks the same up to the B-pillar as the ID.4, although closer inspection shows subtle differences, especially in the design of the front bumper. About the differences in a moment. It is worth noting that the car seems huge. The silhouette is painted quite muscular, gentle lines give it stability, huge rims tightly fill the wheel arches (optionally even 21-inch), and the windows seem quite narrow. In addition, virtually no air intakes at the front, interesting LED lights and a few plastic covers intensify the mentioned impression. Of course, this is primarily a clever stylistic trick, because the ID.5 measures practically the same as the ID.4 (4584 mm in length) and is only slightly longer than, for example, the Hyundai Tucson, which in turn seems very neat and compact.

Of course, thanks to the MEB platform, which will be used to create other electric models in the Volkswagen group, the space in the interior is impressive – nothing has changed here compared to the ID.4. The sense of spaciousness generated by the body has been transferred without any problems to the center, where there is simply plenty of space, both in front, in width, overhead (despite the huge roof window) and in the rear. Interestingly, the manufacturer proudly points out that despite the much more streamlined body, there is only 1 centimeter less space above the head for the rear passengers. There will also be space in the trunk. Ba! Compared to the ID.4, which has a slightly higher roof line at the rear, there is… a few more liters of space! This is all thanks to a slightly redesigned space, so those few liters have probably been crammed into the nooks and crannies, but the fact that we do not lose space is impressive. In addition, there is an additional flat storage compartment under the boot floor, and even lower, in a special compartment, we can fit the charging cable. Space is not wasted! This is a huge plus! We will tell you more about the differences after the first rides, but in the meantime, let’s check how the ID.5 offer looks like and how far it differs in price from the ID.4?

Volkswagen ID.5. Equipment versions and prices

It is worth starting with the fact that the offer will include both conventional equipment versions as well as the top, sporty GTX with four-wheel drive. ID.5 prices start from PLN 209,690. For comparison, the Volkswagen ID.4 costs at least PLN 197,290, so over 10,000 less. Do we only pay extra for a fashionable body? Not really, because the Volkswagen ID.5 already has a few added values ​​at the start that we will not find in the ID.4 (at least at the beginning).
First of all, the new Volkswagen ID.5 is equipped with the new ID.Software 3.0, which allows, among other things, to for quick charging of batteries with electricity with a power of up to 135 kW and a modified voice control system. The use of top software in ID.5 enables remote updating and application of new functions. Thanks to this, the ID.5 is a car of the highest technical level in the Volkswagen electric range. Does this mean that future and existing ID.4 holders will not benefit from the improved software? Yes, they will, but at a later date thanks to the update. But when will it come? Apparently, work on the implementation of the new system is already at its final stage, but it is not known when it will be completed.

Returning to the basic version at the price of PLN 209 690, it is the Pro version with a 174 HP drive, a 77 kWh battery and a rear axle drive. According to the manufacturer, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 10.4 seconds and the range reaches 521 km (according to WLTP). The ID.5 Pro Performance, available from PLN 216,390, is a version that, like the ID.5 Pro, is equipped with a 77 kWh battery, but offers 204 HP, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 8.4 seconds. Top speed The ID.5 of the Pro and Pro Performance variants is 160 km / h. The most important novelty, however, is the GTX variant.

Thanks to the use of two electric motors with a total power of 299 hp and four-wheel drive, this model accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h at 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 180 km / h (20 km / h more than in ” regular “versions). The prices of the ID.5 GTX model start from PLN 243,590.

Volkswagen is developing its new policy for optional equipment that is “bundled”. The new ID.5 can be retrofitted with many options in ten packages. Among them you can find, among others Assistance Plus, which offers a Travel Assist system that uses collective intelligence data and provides semi-automatic driving, or Park Assist Plus with a memory function that can perform memorized, personalized maneuvers. Customers can also decide to purchase packages that affect the appearance of the car (Design, Design Plus), expand the digital capabilities of the vehicle (Infotainment and Infotainment Plus) or increase the convenience of using ID.5 (Comfort and Comfort Plus packages). In summary, from now on it will be impossible to create specific configurations, e.g. almost top-class interior equipment, but without electric seats, etc.

Summary

After the Volkswagen ID.4 test, I found it to be one of the best electric cars I have ever driven. It offered a really sensational comfort of travel, I will not mention silence, because it is obvious in electrics, but the mute outside noise while driving deserves praise. I admit that the ID.5 looks much better and the GTX variant promises to be really interesting. The modernized systems, e.g. parking with memory function. We look forward to the first ride!
