Although there are less and less road accidents and their victims every year, police data from recent years show that one number is increasing. It is the number of drunk drivers detained. The government noticed the problem and declared war on drivers under the influence of alcohol. Therefore, rankomat.pl experts analyzed the data on this group of drivers and checked what penalties they face in 2022.
Over 8,000 more drunk drivers
Exactly every 6.7 minutes last year, an intoxicated driver was stopped for inspection. This makes 78,436 drunk drivers in total. Last year, there were 11.8% fewer of them. It could have been caused by lower traffic on Polish roads at the turn of the first and second quarter due to the lockdown. However, compared to 2019, there were over 2% more of them, and compared to 2018, over 9% more.
Less tragic accidents
While alcohol behind the wheel remains a problem, police statistics provide positive data in the context of road accidents. This is because the number of accidents and people injured and killed in them decrease every year. Just three years ago, there were 27% more accidents on Polish roads, in which 20% more people died and 30% more of their participants were injured.
Up to 600 times greater penalty for “driving on double throttle”
Drunken drivers have been the target of the government since last year. The changes planned by them in the penal and road code will hit hard for those who decide to drive under the influence of alcohol. A person who has consumed alcohol has between 0.2 and 0.5 prom in their blood. alcohol. In the case of a breathalyzer test, this means a result of 0.1 to 0.25 mg of alcohol per liter of exhaled air. With higher rates of alcohol in the body, we are talking about intoxication.
– Some of the changes in the law are already in place. Drivers after drinking alcohol can expect a fine of not less than PLN 2,500. However, the court may impose a fine of up to PLN 30,000 on them. zloty. Previously, the trading limits for such people ranged from PLN 50 to PLN 5,000. An additional penalty is invariably a driving ban for 6 months to 3 years. It should also be remembered that making the prices of third party liability insurance dependent on the obtained penalty points will be another element of repercussions – explains Stefania Stuglik, an expert on motor insurance at rankomat.pl.
For now, the penalties for drunk driving remain unchanged. The driver is liable for up to 2 years imprisonment for such an act, a sanction for the Victims’ Fund and Post-penitentiary Assistance in the amount of at least PLN 5,000, a fine depending on the perpetrator’s income (from 10 to 540 daily rates) and a driving ban for at least 3 years. However, there is a high probability that these penalties will also be tightened.
This is not the end of changes
The government is proceeding with further changes to the law that we can expect in the near future. They are especially aimed at extremely irresponsible drivers. According to them, drivers who have been found to have 1.5 per mille of alcohol in their blood or more will have to reckon with the confiscation of the vehicle or its monetary equivalent, if it belongs to another person. Similar repercussions await those who cause an accident with 1 ounce of alcohol in their blood.
First of all, caution
Even the tiniest amounts of alcohol in the body can impair the ability to drive and assess the situation. At a critical moment, it can affect someone’s health or life. In 2020, the number of people who died in a road accident due to a drunk driver increased by 12.5%. We are still waiting for the annual police report to find out if 2021 has seen an improvement on this issue. The NIK report from 3 months ago verifying the implementation of the National Road Safety Program in 2013-2020 also gave disturbing conclusions. In 2017, every 160 driver detained was in a state of alcohol consumption or intoxication. In 2020, it was already one in 70 drivers.
