Gasoline and diesel decline, electric car sales increase

Electric car sales in Turkey rose to 3 thousand 283 in January-August 2022, an increase of almost 3 times compared to the same period of the previous year.

According to the data compiled from the Automotive Distributors Association (ODD), the total sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Turkey decreased by 8.5 percent in the 8 months of this year compared to the same period of 2021 and became 458 thousand 446.

In the said period, automobile sales decreased by 9.4 percent to 354 thousand 543 units and light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 5.2 percent to 103 thousand 903 units.

When the automobile market is evaluated according to the engine type, it is noteworthy that the decline in the sales of diesel-powered automobiles, whose production has been gradually reduced worldwide, and which is planned to be completely stopped in the future, continues. The fact that manufacturers offer fewer diesel-powered vehicles to the market compared to previous years is also considered to be one of the important factors in the decline in diesel sales.

A decrease was also recorded in the sales of auto gas cars. The sales of hybrid and electric cars, which are expected to replace cars with internal combustion engines in the future, continued to increase as in recent years.

In the Turkish automobile market, in the first 8 months of this year, gasoline cars took the first place with 250 thousand 401 sales, while diesel cars took the second place with 60 thousand 316 units.

While hybrid car sales were 34,265, auto gas car sales were 6,278 and electric car sales were 3,283.

In January-August 2021, 256,815 gasoline, 80,643 diesel, 33,287 hybrid, 19,451 auto gas and 1,196 electric cars were sold. Thus, sales of electric cars increased approximately 3 times.

Gasoline car sales decreased by 2.5 percent, diesel car sales by 25.2 percent and auto gas car sales by 67.7 percent in the 8 months of this year compared to the same period of 2021.

In this period, hybrid car sales increased by 2.9 percent and electric car sales increased by 174.5 percent.

In the January-August periods of 2021 and 2022, the number of automobile sales, shares and changes by engine type are as follows:

The share of diesel cars, which was 20.6 percent in January-August 2021, decreased to 17 percent in the same period of this year. In the said period, the share of gasoline cars increased from 65.6 percent to 70.6 percent, while the share of auto gas cars decreased from 5 percent to 1.8 percent.

The share of electric cars in total sales increased from 0.3 percent to 0.9 percent, and the share of hybrid cars increased from 8.5 percent to 9.7 percent. (AA)
